A couple of years back, we had a string of bad luck with can openers. It seemed like every time I turned around, we were having to buy a new one! I think we bought four or five in the course of a year because we just couldn’t find one that worked and lasted for more than a few months. A can opener is one of those things you don’t think about until you have to wrestle with a junky one every time you want to open a dang can.
I had told my mom about our can opener fiasco and she gave me one for Christmas. Funny gift, right? That was probably four years ago and our can opener is still going strong. Freedom from can opener woes? I’d say it was a pretty awesome gift!
So what’s the secret? There are two things that will end your search for the perfect can opener once and for all.
1. It’s the manufacturer. Swing A Way can openers are the best. Just trust me. All different companies use Swing A Way can openers, so just look for the name printed on the metal somewhere. This one is from Target. (P.S. No affiliation… just sharing a product I love!)
2. Rinse your can opener off after each use and stick it in the dish drain to dry. This will keep the blades sharp for a long, long time. My mom’s can opener lasted something like 15 years because she does this religiously.
So there you go. Now you know how to choose a can opener that will actually last.

I have a Tupperware one that cuts the sides of the cans so there are no sharp edges. I have had it for almost 15 years as well…. It took a little time to get used to, but it works beautifully still!
