A few weeks ago I got a crazy idea. Wouldn't it be neat if there was such a thing as an edible Easter basket? A basket made of candy that you could fill with candy... it sounded so cool that I HAD to find a way to make it happen. After a lot of brainstorming and a few failed attempts, I was successful!
This Easter basket is made of chocolate and candy. This is just way too exciting, guys. And guess what? I'm no chocolatier. If I can make it, you can too!
To start, you'll need to gather up supplies. I bought everything at Walmart. My store always has seasonal candy in two areas---one candy aisle in the food section and one area near the front of the home side of the store.
M&M’s® Easter Sundae (only available at Walmart for a limited time)
Candy Melts (I chose green but Walmart had several pretty pastels to choose from)
Start by melting the chocolate according to package directions. Wash and dry the balloon, then blow it up. Tape the balloon to a small, heavy bowl to help it stay upright while you work. Spread the top part of the balloon with the chocolate and smooth it out using a spatula. Try to create an even edge around the bottom where the chocolate stops.
Let the chocolate harden completely, then gently pop the balloon.
Remove all parts of the balloon from the inside of the chocolate. Be very gentle during this step, but if you happen to break a piece, you can use a bit of melted chocolate to "glue" the broken pieces back together.
Now comes the fun part... decorating the basket with candy! I made candy flowers using both types of M&M’s® and jellybeans, then I did a simple border around the top of the basket with the Easter M&M’s®. Be as creative with your design as you want!
To attach the candy to the basket, use more candy melt. Place it in a plastic sandwich bag, cut the tip off one corner and pipe a little bit of chocolate onto the back of each piece of candy. The melted chocolate acts like glue!
When you are satisfied with the way your basket looks, it's time to fill it! I added two DOVE® Milk Chocolate Easter Bunnies. I think they look so cute together! Little bunny friends.
I also filled it with plenty of Starburst® Jellybeans (they are my husband's favorite!), a Skittles® egg, all the mini candy bars from the 23.5oz Easter Mixed Brand Chocolates (package includes SNICKERS®, DOVE®, M&M’s®, TWIX®, MILKY WAY®, 3 Musketeers®) and Hubba Bubba® Bubble Tape... what can I say, I'm a sucker for nostalgic candy from my childhood!
This food-slash-craft was so fun that I may never want to use a traditional Easter basket again. Hello, you can't EAT those!
