The ONLY Microwave Chocolate Lava Mug Cake You'll Ever Need

My sweet tooth can get pretty fierce sometimes. Whiny children, long days and most remodeling projects are usually what bring it on. Sometimes I just want a treat and I want it NOW.

That's where this amazing microwave mug dessert comes in. A few years ago I tested a bunch of different recipes (read about that HERE).

Most of them were different levels of gross.

Then I found this recipe and it is a true gem. It's almost like cheating... you get a decadent ooey-gooey treat exploding with chocolatey goodness in less than a minute!

Want the recipe? It's so simple!

Microwave Chocolate Lava Mug Cake

2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 small pinch salt
4 tablespoons white sugar
4 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons cocoa powder

Melt the butter in a coffee mug. Add water, vanilla and salt and stir until smooth. Add sugar, cocoa powder and flour and stir until all the lumps are out. Cook in the microwave for 30 seconds. If you want less "lava" and more cake you can cook it for 10 seconds more.

I've made this mug cake over and over again in the last few years and it's perfect as is, but it's also been fun to come up with creative add-ins. Here are a few of my favorite variations. They are just as easy to make. Simply stir up the batter, add the extra ingredients, then cook like normal!

- Peanut Butter Lover. Add 1 teaspoon peanut butter.
Chocolate Covered Berry. Add 1 teaspoon raspberry or strawberry jam.
Gimme S'More. Add 10 mini marshmallows and a sprinkling of graham cracker crumbs.
A La Mode. One scoop of ice cream and you've got yourself a rockin' dessert!
Caramel Lover. Add two square caramel candies.
Mint To Be. Sprinkle with mint baking chips or crushed up candy canes.
Nuts For Hazelnuts. Add one teaspoon of Nutella. Oh, baby!
Chocoholic. Add a handful of chocolate chips or pieces of a chopped up candy bar.

Can you tell that I've made this dessert a lot? Just you wait... once you've tried it, you'll fall in love!

  1. I tried adding 1 teaspoon of inst. coffee and it was a little to strong I think it would have been better with only 1/2 or maybe only a 1/4 o a teaspoon of inst. coffee! but will you try and figure out which is better cause I don't make mug cakes very often so can you?
    Thanks!

    1. I'm sorry, Kit. I don't drink coffee so I don't think I'll be able to try making it for you. But next time you are in the mood for a treat, try adding 1/4 teaspoon and see how you like it. Good luck!

  10. For 'mint to be' do you put the candy cane pieces on top before or after cooking? =D

    1. Either one. I prefer to put them on before cooking so they get a little bit melty.

  12. So yummy!! I used milk instead of water and a pinch of baking soda. Cooked it a bit too long at 1min, so it was cakey not lava like, but a scoop of ice cream on top and I didn't care as it satisfied my craving in less than 2 min 😊

  16. It's really good with two Andes month chocolate things and a quarter teaspoon of peanut butter (it sounds weird but I promise it's good).

  17. Mine probably could've done with 1:30min but even undercooked and squishy it was still good, very dense, only did half the cocoa. Went great with vanilla ice cream.

  20. This turned out terribly for me! The mixture was so dry, definitely didn't have enough moisture, added some milk and still took 2 minutes cooking before it even closely looked near being Cake...

    1. Bri, It's definitely not supposed to be dry. My guess is that you measured one of the ingredients wrong.

  21. Can I leave out the chocolate for a simple vanilla cake or would that not work? I love the chocolate version I eat it all the time!

  22. Absolutely delicious. I kept mine in the microwave a bit longer and added choc chips and coffee instead of water as per one of the comments. It was moist and decadent. Next time (and there'll be a next time) I'll have with some vanilla ice cream. Shumeaz
