DIY Fall Decorations: Mini Embroidery Hoop Banner and a Cross-Stitch Pumpkin

Create your own DIY fall decorations in a nontraditional color scheme: a beautiful macrame inspired mini embroidery hoop banner and a fun cross-stitched pumpkin.

Create your own DIY fall decorations in a nontraditional color scheme: a beautiful macrame inspired mini embroidery hoop banner and a fun cross-stitched pumpkin.

I'm so excited to share two creative fall craft projects with you today. Thank you to Hobby Lobby for sponsoring this post.

When I think of fall crafting, I tend to think everything has to be orange, red and brown. This year I decided to challenge myself to come up with a nontraditional color scheme to decorate my entryway table. I headed to my local Hobby Lobby and found inspiration in the yarn aisle.

I decided to try to cross-stitch a carve-able foam pumpkin! Want to give it a try?

Foam Pumpkin Decorating Idea: Cross-Stitch Pumpkin

Step 1: Cut a hole in the pumpkin so you can access the inside. I just realized as I was typing this out that since it's a fake pumpkin, you could totally cut from the bottom and then your cut lines wouldn't show. Dang. Wish I would have thought of that sooner!

A smart tip for carving a fake foam pumpkin!

Step 2: Round up a few different colors of yarn. I chose a color palette of blush pink, olive green, cream, navy and mustard yellow. It's definitely not your typical fall color scheme, but I love these colors together!

Step 3: Choose a design. I went with a simple smattering of X's, but the sky is the limit here. Draw the design on with a pencil, then use a power drill with a small drill bit to make holes in the pumpkin.

Step 4: Use a blunt tip needle with a big eye to stitch your design onto your pumpkin.

The next fall craft I have to share with you today is this fun embroidery hoop garland. I'm combining two hot trends -- macrame and embroidery hoop wreaths -- into one fun garland that's perfect to hang in your home this fall.

I purchased these 4 inch embroidery hoops from Hobby Lobby and used the same yarn colors from my cross-stitched pumpkin to tie the two projects together.

Step 1: Remove the inner circle from the embroidery hoop. The plain hoop is the one we'll use. Set the hoop with the metal fastener aside to use for something else.

Step 2: Cut about twenty pieces of yarn that are each 8-10 inches long. Fold them in half and attach them to the hoop using a lark's head knot, as shown in the photo below.

Step 3: Add flowers! I bought a package of pre-made paper flowers, but you could cut them using your Silhouette machine if you prefer using this rolled paper flower tutorial.

Use hot glue to attach the flowers to the wreath. For more visual interest, it helps to layer several flowers in different sizes on top of each other.

The last step is super easy... just string all of your mini hoop wreaths together and hang them up! I had to tie a knot on each one to keep them evenly spaced and facing the same direction.

What do you think of my fall decor this year? Would you try a non-traditional color palette or do you like to stick with the norm? The good news is that you could easily adjust this craft to suit your personal preferences.

Either way, be sure to stop by Hobby Lobby for loads of creative inspiration and don't forget to print out a coupon before you go. Happy crafting!

  1. Super cute! There's no way a real pumpkin would survive even a week where we live because of the humidity/temperature. The cross stitch pumpkin really sweet and I love the embroidery hoop banner! We're currently decorating for a new arrival and something similar could look really cute hanging over Baby's dresser.

  2. Congratulations! The banner WOULD be adorable in a nursery. I love that idea!
