Beyond Paint Product Review

Learn how to paint wood furniture the easy way with no sanding or priming!

This post was created in partnership with Beyond Paint. All opinions are my own.

How to Paint Wood Furniture

Painting furniture is a great way to give an old piece new life. My friend recently picked up these drab wood nightstands at a thrift store and wanted to turn them into Lego tables for her two boys for Christmas. Time was really tight (we decided to paint them the week before Christmas), so I decided it would be the perfect chance to test a new product.

Best Paint for Furniture

BEYOND PAINT is a special paint that bonds, primes and seals all in one step. The time it took to finish this project was drastically reduced. In fact, I think it's the fastest I've ever painted a piece of furniture!

BEYOND PAINT bonds to many surfaces... wood, metal, glass, varnish, plastic, marble, linoleum etc so if you have a difficult surface, Beyond Paint will be a durable and easy option for what would normally be a tough surface to paint.

The makeover kit came with everything we needed to complete our project: paint, paint brush, roller handle and cover and paint tray. That was another huge timesaver... we didn't have to dig around in the garage looking for supplies!

How to Paint Furniture

The most important step is the prep work. Luckily, you don't need to sand, but you do need to thoroughly clean your furniture item. A clean surface is essential to ensuring the paint adheres properly, so don't skimp on this step! It must be oil, grease, dirt and wax free. Mineral spirits or a vinegar/water solution are probably the best cleaners to use. Do not use TSP as it can leave behind a residue that interferes with bonding. If you plan to paint kitchen cabinets, a good degreaser like Simple Green or Zap will be really important since kitchens tend to see a lot of greasy splatters.

Furniture Paint

Once the furniture is clean, it's time to roll on the first coat of paint. We used the brush for cutting in around the edges and in corners, then rolled the paint everywhere else.

BEYOND PAINT is low VOC so it didn't smell bad at all. We were able to paint indoors with no problems. It's also UV resistant, which means it won't fade in sunlight, so it would be perfect for doors or shutters or other outside projects.

After the first coat is complete, I suggest waiting a full four hours before applying the second coat. If the first coat isn't completely dry and you cover it with a second coat, it can remain slightly tacky and cause you all sorts of trouble in the long run. Ask me how I know.

So be patient. Wait the full four hours. Just do it.

BEYOND PAINT will be dry to the touch in 2-4 hours. It is sometimes still sensitive to chipping until it has undergone an initial cure period of 2-3 days. Allow to fully cure for 30 days before routinely washing with soap.

We had about half of the paint left over, so we put some in a glass baby food jar to save in case of touch-ups and we plan to use the rest for another project in the future.

After we finished up the painting, we added Lego base plates to the tops and put bins in the open bottom part to store toys.

DIY Lego Table

Didn't they turn out great? It's like a whole new piece of furniture! And honestly, it only took about two hours of hands-on time to finish. Two hours people! I am hooked on this product. It's such an incredible time saver!

  1. That's something I would try. Thanks for letting us know about it. I love the pictures of vehicles you have on the wall. Where did you get those?

    1. This is my friend's house, but the prints are from an Etsy shop.
