Welcome to Pinterest Tested! Ever wonder if that miracle cleaner is really miraculous? Or what about that homemade facial cleanser or delicious-looking recipe? This is the place to find out! Each Monday I am testing Pins that catch my eye to see if they really live up to the claims made on Pinterest. It’s like the Mythbusters of Domesticity!
Today I’m testing THIS PIN:
It’s a problem we sweaty people have to deal with… those horrid yellow stains on all of our white undershirts. I have tried many different remedies and have yet to find one that works perfectly. And apparently I am not alone: this is a very popular Pin!
THE TEST: Will hydrogen peroxide and Dawn work as a stain remover for yellow underarm stains?
I gave it a whirl. And it worked… sort of. It definitely lightened the stains on most of the shirts, but it didn’t completely get rid of them. Here’s my picture:But what I think would work really well is if I used this every time I wash my white shirts to help prevent the stains from ever getting bad.
THE RESULT: It worked, but not miraculously. I think it could get rid of stains with repeated use.
After I washed these, I read that sprinkling a little baking powder on the stain helps with scrubbing power. I am definitely going to try this again. I think if I treat them with every wash, this solution will work.

I tried this to and was very disappointed. Then I tried a different on which is HOT HOT HOT water, 1 cup bleach, 1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent, and 1/4 cup borax. Throw it all in the washing machine and let it go. I was amazed! Hubby's t shirts were saved. No more yellow armpits and with no scrubbing.

I've been working on getting rid of NASTY pit stains, like so thick that it's almost like waxed paper. Clearly we have pit issues here, but I found that this recipe did work, but it would need more than one simple application. I've had to do it a few times to hubby's shirts and they are looking better. it truly works best if you can get it on as soon as the shirt comes off and let it sit a while, a few days.

I just tested a handful of pit stain cleaners yesterday! The Dawn/peroxide, bleach ones, vinegar ones, ammonia ones, and Oxiclean.
THE OXICLEAN WORKED! Like a miracle. The 1/4 scoop oxiclean to 16oz water, poured it straight onto the armpits, scrubbed with an old toothbrush, poured an extra 16 oz warm water and let sit for an hour. It was amazing – especially on cotton, because they didn't really require scrubbing! (tried it on some August Silk cardigans, but they needed a light scrub with the toothbrush. still came out pristine!)

I recently did this, but added the baking soda as suggested in other posts- it worked miracles! My husbands shirt have horrible pit-stains: mixture of sweat & deodorant resulting in a gross film that still smells after washing.
So, I mixed about 1 t dish soap, 4 T hydrogen peroxide & 4 T baking soda. I scrubbed my husbands pit-stained shirts (using a stiff cleaning brush), let set for 1 hour or so, and then washed as normal. The stains came out, as did the smell. It worked on colored clothes as well with no problems.
No more smelly, gross pit-stains any more!!

I'm glad I found your blog! Saves me a little time and money if I know someone else has tested these things first. Thanks!
Are you open to suggestions for other pins to test?

I saw a different concoction where you take Oxyclean and ammonia, mix/put on stains (which are caused by the deodorant)and they used a brush to scrub them. I didn't have the brush, so I rubbed the material together, threw the items in the wash and it was amazing how well everything came out. The items I washed had been stored for over 20 years! When they were packed away, they were fine…when I took them out…stains. Blech.

I just did this adding the baking soda and it work great. A few of the shirts will need to be treated a second time to completely remove the stains but no more smell.

Just make a paste with baking soda and water, put on the stain and let dry. Then with a wet toothbrush brush it of and just put it in the washer. It saved some old t-shirts I wasn't wearing anymore because of the sweat and deo stains.
