2016 Christmas Home Tour (Tons of Ideas You Can Totally Steal)

I’m excited to share my Christmas home tour with you today. I was able to decorate inexpensively this year by reusing decor that I already had and just mixing it in a different way with only a few new pieces. There are definitely some ideas that you could easily replicate here, so I hope you’ll be inspired to try something new in your holiday decorating this year. I’ve included affiliate links just in case you want to buy anything for your home.

I made the wooden “Christmas Tree Farm” sign last year (tutorial here) and just moved it upstairs instead of above the fireplace. The little red truck is a new purchase from Target and was only $3!

My favorite new addition in the entire room is these vintage ice skates. I purchased them at the thrift store this past summer for $3 and have just been waiting for the chance to use them for Christmas decor. I added a screw to the back side of my giant chalkboard, looped the laces over the screw, then filled the skates with greenery and some vintage red ornament picks. Easiest decoration, but I adore the look.

Many of my DIY Christmas pillows made a return again this year too. The gray sweater pillow and the plaid deer pillow are both DIY (tutorials HERE). I bought the buffalo check pillow covers on Amazon for $5 each. THESE are the ones I bought. If you decide to get some, just know that it takes a long time for them to get here. But I will say, the price can’t be beat!

The only new pillows are this pair of plaid pillows. I bought THESE place mats from Target and turned them into pillows. Have you tried that trick before? It’s so easy… just unpick a hole in one edge, fill the placemat with stuffing, then sew the hole shut and you have an awesome pillow for just a few dollars.

Now let’s talk about the best part… the tree!

I decided that I wanted to try flocking our tree this year. It’s a great way to change up a tree you’ve had for years.

I bought THIS flocking (the 2 lb. bag) from Amazon for $25 and it was enough to do a light coating on the tree. I thought I was doing a heavy coat, but when I stood back, I realized that I could have gone much thicker. Oh, well. Next time, I guess.

The flocking was easy to apply. You just spray the tree down with water, put the flocking in a fine kitchen strainer, then sift it all over the wet branches. After all of the flocking is applied, mist the tree again. I would recommend doing this outside. It was messy! I also wish I would have used our garden hose with the spray nozzle set to mist. More water would have made the flocking stick better and the water bottle made my hands tired.

On to Christmas tree decorations!

There’s a good mix of things on the tree this year: two kinds of ribbon, gold circle paper garland, red berries, white hydrangeas and some white paper wreaths I cut using my Silhouette machine.

I used a small sunburst mirror as an unexpected tree topper and I think it might be my favorite part of the tree!

When the lights are low and the whole tree is glowing, I just want to burst out singing “fa la la la la.”

Instead of a traditional tree skirt, this year I put my tree in a wooden box. Except it’s not really wood and it only cost me $4 and took an hour to make. Go check it out HERE.

I will be doing a second home tour downstairs next week. We are going to the mountains to cut down our first ever live tree this year! I’m excited about that, plus I’m trying something completely out of my comfort zone for the decor downstairs, so we’ll see how that goes. Thanks for stopping by!
