My in-laws came a few weeks ago to help us with the move, and they brought me one of my favorite treats in the world… my mother-in-law’s famous Christmas dried apple slices. Every year when their apple trees produce, they dehydrate apple slices to give away at Christmas time. Look how cute:
These red and green dried apple slices are slightly sweet and incredibly delicious. They are the perfect neighbor gift because they are unique and much lighter than most Christmas treats. They stay fresh until after the cookie plates are all licked clean.
So what’s the secret to making the slices red and green? Jello!
Here’s how you can make your very own Christmas dried apple slices:
– apples, any variety
– red jello powder
– green jello powder
Slice off the top stem side of the apple and then slice the apple into thin rounds, somewhere between 1/8″ to 1/4″ thick. A mandoline slicer works best so they are all the same thickness. Remove the seeds or the whole core. I leave the peel on to save time, but you can remove it.
Dip one side of each apple slice into the jello powder, then arrange in a single layer in your dehydrator or onto a parchment paper-lined baking pan.
Dehydrator: Turn the dehydrator to 135ºF. Allow the apples to dehydrate for 6 to 8 hours or until they are dried through.
Oven: Preheat the oven to 200ºF. Bake the apples slices for 1 hour, then flip them and allow to bake for another 1 to 2 hours until the chips are no longer moist. Flip occasionally and check them often.
I like to package the apples in mason jars to give as gifts, but they would also be cute in festive celophane bags.
