Farmhouse Style Tire Wreath Tutorial

A few weeks ago, I received a challenge from Hobby Lobby to create a spring wreath tutorial to share with you. I thought that pretty much sounded like heaven since Hobby Lobby = my happy place. I decided to try to come up with a clever, unconventional front door wreath. When I saw this galvanized metal home decor piece that looked like an old tire, I fell in love and knew it had to come home with me.

Doesn’t it remind you of a tire swing? I filled it with happy blush pink and spring green flowers and think it is the perfect touch of farmhouse style. Just look at the thick rope handles and the cool vintage patina on the metal.

It makes my heart go pitter patter.
So I bet you want to make one too, right? Here’s what you’ll need:
Antique Metal Tire. It was in the seasonal decor section at my Hobby Lobby. That’s the part of the store they switch out for each new season. So a few months ago it was full of Christmas stuff. THAT section. Not like you would ever want to get lost in Hobby Lobby. wink wink. ****Update 1/12/18: The tire is BACK IN STOCK!!!  Get yours online HERE. ****

Flowers. Hobby Lobby has an amazing floral section. I came up with probably ten different flower combinations that all would have been gorgeous. I bought all of the flowers in the photo, but only ended up using the two bigger bouquets. The exact flowers I used are also available on Hobby Lobby’s website HERE and HERE if you want to look them up. I have found that it saves a ton of money to buy bouquets and tear them apart rather than buying all individual stems. So there’s a little tip for you. And if you want to save even more, always print out a 40% off coupon before heading to Hobby Lobby. This week’s coupon can be found HERE.

Floral foam. I used some scrap pieces that I already had at home, but if you need to buy some, choose the green dry floral foam located in the floral supply aisle.
Okay, let’s start making!
Step 1. Cut the floral foam to fit inside the tire and hot glue it into place.

Step 2. Deconstruct the floral bouquets. They were wrapped together around the bottom of the stems, so I just cut off all of the floral tape and separated out all of the individual stems.

Step 3. Group like flowers together so you can see what you have to work with.

Step 4. Place the large flowers first, then fill in around them with the smaller flowers. For this particular arrangement, I wanted to make sure I had some pieces that drooped down over the bottom edge of the metal. The good news is that you can just keep pulling things back off and putting them back on and fiddling with it until you are pleased with the look of the arrangement.
And that’s all you need to do! This wreath took me less than an hour to put together, but I think it looks like a million bucks!

This wreath also looks amazing styled for fall. I love the fact that I can switch out the flowers and have a fresh new look for each season.

**UPDATE: The metal tires from Hobby Lobby sold out like hot cakes. Some readers had luck finding them in their local stores, so check there first. Then if you can’t find a tire, check out THIS POST for alternative ideas to get a similar look.**

**UPDATE 1/12/18: The tire is back in stock online! Find it here. RUN to get yours before they sell out again!**

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Hobby Lobby. The opinions and text are all mine.

  1. I went to order the metal tire but they are out of stock! I guess everyone loves this and has ordered all of them I'll run to the local hobby lobby tomorrow and see if they have any!

  2. I love this so much!! I stopped by hobby lobby this morning and they had one so I snatched it up! I didn't have time to grab flowers, but I wanted to make sure I got a tire!! So excited! This is my project for Monday! (Also, we are going to the Silos tomorrow!!)

    • They are a hot commodity because you kicked this one out of the park! I have followed your blog for years, and one of the things I've always loved about your crafts and style is that it's new and/or unique. It doesn't feel like things everyone else does (that I usually love too). It's fresh and feels like things normal people can do. So thanks! And way to go here. It really is gorgeous and I can't wait to make mine! Probably one of my favorite things you've shared!

  3. Sadly, I was so busy shoveling snow, that I'm only now getting caught up on some of my online reading. Now that I've fallen in love with your wreath, they are sold out online as others have said, and there aren't any stores close to me. I love the mixture of the galvanized tire with the softness of the flowers.

    • You must have gotten hit with that big storm! I'm so sorry! I live in Idaho and we had a heck of a winter and this week is the first time I've been able to go outside without a big coat since October.

Fingers crossed that they get more in stock soon. I hope you get one!

  4. I found my wreath in my Hobby Lobby – I got lucky! I'm having the hardest time with getting the foam to stick to the tire though. It hot glued fine and then I have put most of my flowers in the foam. Then, I accidentally knocked the tire over (I'm working on the floor which is carpet, so not a very far fall) and the foam pieces popped right off. Any other tips for glue??

    • Oh no! I'd try some kind of super glue or gorilla glue if the hot glue isn't working. Did you add A LOT of hot glue and press it into place while the glue is still really hot? If hot glue cools even a little, it doesn't stick very well. Hope that helps! Good luck!

  5. I absolutely love this and would love to make one for my own but unfortunately Hobby Lobby must be sold out. Do you have any suggestions as to another place that sells them? Great job on this, love your blog! Thank you.

  6. Oh my goodness! I seriously love this wreath! I know you said to check in stores at Hobby Lobby but can you tell me the item #? Hobby Lobby asked me to get them that so they could search for it! You seriously could be part of the Magnolia Team!

  7. Jennifer….I fell in love with this the first time I saw it on Pinterest! I recently started my own blog, and wanted to let you know that I gave you a shout out on my post today, at My Wee Abode! Let me know if you would rather I not include you in the post. 🙂
